THE STORY
The castle was originally built in 1745 by Chulaybe, the eldest son of a Bedouin ruler of the Galilee, Dahar al-Oman. One of the only historic buildings preserved in its entirety, it still forms part of the wall that surrounded the Old City of Tiberias. The castle and citadel-like structure hosted honorable guests throughout history, and even contains the original “Hall of the Knights” preserved on the lowest floor.
Since the ancient castle was acquired in 2007, it has undergone a long process of renewal and reconstruction. Experts in restoration and engineers of the Society for the Conservation of Ancient Buildings and the Israeli Antiquity Authority cooperated to begin the complex work of restoring the building to its ancient glory. The arches were meticulously restored, and the stones reconstructed. The outer structure showed little damage and remains essentially untouched.
